Four million Americans suffer from Dementia that generally first becomes apparent with memory problems. Dementia is a progressive decline in cognitive abilities which reveals itself in impairments in language and communication, loss of sensory motor skills, confusion and the inability to modulate emotion. The constellation of impairments interfere with the individual's ability to manage the tasks of daily life and can be accompanied with socially disruptive behaviors that create serious threats to the individuals safety and well being.
Alzheimer's Disease is the most commonly known dementia illness. Another form of Dementia is vascular dementia. It is important that the patient receive the proper diagnosis which is significant in order to receive the proper treatment. Other significant possible causes of confusion may range from depression, malnutrition or toxic effects of medication whether prescribed or over the counter.
